Conquer the Cold 2024

Back to Event List

Monday, January 15 to Thursday, February 15

Bravo to the 170 people who braved the Michigan winter to bike, walk, roll, carpool, or take the bus during Conquer the Cold 2024! Here are some of the highlights of the retro edition of the challenge:

  • 4,979 trips logged
  • 17.1 tons of greenhouse gas saved
  • 15,890 miles travelled without driving alone
  • 23,116 travel miles avoided by teleworking
  • 100% of participants earned the Walking badge
  • 52% of participants earned their public transportation badge

Additionally, 80% of trips taken during the challenge were completed by walking, biking, carpool, or bus. The high temperature in Ann Arbor on the first day of the challenge, January 15, was 6 degrees Fahrenheit. Yet temperatures reached 60 degrees in early February (setting a new record high on February 9!).

By using active and shared modes of transportation, you helped the Ann Arbor area get closer to community goals of reducing emissions and vehicle miles traveled.

The program would also like to recognize the participants with the highest point totals:

  • Xinyi G., Team Feliz Y Sano
  • Rob U., Team Ward 5
  • Naomi C., Team Pebble Rebels

Points were capped at 8 points per day (equivalent to two round trips) during the 32-day challenge. No participants reached the maximum possible points. Prizes for the top three individuals were generously provided by Bivouac Ann Arbor, H.E.H. Human Electric Hybrids, and the Ann Arbor Downtown Development Authority.
